World Refugee Day coming up

7 June 2010 by Jennifer

World Refugee Day is on Sunday 20 June.

Events around the UK have already started, but most are in the week before the 20th, a.k.a. Refugee Week. See the In Your Area bit of the Refugee Week site.

The Refugee Week partnership has also invented a thing called Simple Acts. Here’s a tiny video celebrating it…

They’ve listed twenty suggested acts including “Cook a dish from another country“, “Tell a child a story from another country” (recipes and stories included!) and “Have tea with a refugee“.

London’s events include the World Refugee Day Umbrella Parade, on Sunday 20 June.

Everyone will carry a huge white umbrella, as a symbol of care and shelter, representing our proud tradition of offering safety to those in fear for their lives. The umbrellas will be available free of charge at the meeting point. Similar parades are also taking place in eight other cities in Europe so we will be marching in solidarity with thousands of others across the continent.

Appreciation, criticism & new ideas all welcome...
